« Street style » gets political

Slogan t-shirts are not new to the fashion scene. They date back to the 1960s aiming to share political and social statements. For instance they defended female rights, civil or gay rights.

Today, slogan tees are coming back. You probably recall the Dior “We shall all be feminists” or LGBTQA+ “Save the dolls” (worn by ambassador Pedro Pascal himself) -designed by Connor Ives t-shirts.

Recently I saw two « interesting » takes on the trend. A group of boys in Malta proudly wearing « I love milfs » T-shirts. My first thought was : they are ready for a bachelor party. But then I thought what if they were wearing these t-shirts as a political statement, as to say : Leonardo DiCaprio and milfs are on the same level. Again this is a theory. As an optimist, I would like to believe that they were wearing the t-shirt for the second reason.

The second take on the trend was next level. A woman, walking on the streets of Paris, displaying an « I love pussy » T-shirt. At first I was kind of startled by the tee, wondering weather or not it came from a sex shop. Then again I had another theory: what if this t-shirt was so over the top that it celebrated women?

Once again, designers and street style respond to one another. Let’s hope street style is following the mindset of designers.
