Everything you need to know about Fashion week

Many of you ask me questions about Fashion week. What is it about? How many shows does it cover? Among other. This article will take you on Fashion week journey to help you grasp what Fashion week is about.

Fashion Shows:

Fashion week is an event in which designers and brands present their collections during shows. The most famous ones are located in Paris, London, Milan and New York.

However, fashion shows tend to happen in other places as well: cities like Copenhagen or Seoul but also in little towns (Louis Vuitton organised a show in the Maeght Foundation in the south of France, a contemporary museum in the south of France that I was lucky to visit).

The collections are showcased the following way.

Spring and summer collections are presented together just like the fall and winter collections. The collections are presented three times for each season : twice in January, once in March ; then once in June, once in July and once in September most of the time.

First, there is Men’s Fashion Week (with models wearing a lot of casual clothes), then the Couture shows (my favourite, there are many fairytale like dresses and attire during these shows in beautiful venues, mostly hotels, the best one was probably the Ziad Nakad at the Intercontinental Hotel), finally Women’s Fashion Week (with a lot of contemporary wear, I recall seeing during the Moonyounghee fashion show for the example).

Presentations:

Presentations are the « still » version of fashion shows. Models are placed by a crew in a specific setting and photographed. They wear the latest collections of designers and slightly move according to the photographers’ needs.

Trade shows and showrooms :

Fashion week goes beyond fashion shows: showrooms and trade shows are organised to present international brands and trends to buyers and press members. My favourite ones are Tranoï (a trade show in which I discover orignal outfits), Texworld evolution (a showroom that showcases fabrics and attire from all over the world, especially Asian countries, where I met my good friends Louis and Greg, Artistic Directors of the event) and Splash (a trade show where swimsuits are featured).

Other events:

Fashion week also includes after show events in which fashion aficionados meet around drinks and music to network, or events taking place at embassies or art studios.

I hope this article helped you understand Fashion week.
