My PFW journey

Fashion week gives me the opportunity to meet multicultural fashion professionals and to witness, grasp, the globalised aspect of fashion. Let me share my experience of this PFW with you.

 I attended fashion shows of Asian and European designers, who were mainly Japanese and Russian.

During the Moonyounghee (picture above) and Valentin Yudashkin (picture below) fashion shows, models rocked the tomboy trend, dressed in suits and loafers. The 1980s were the queens of the runway: sparkles and light effects abounded.  

Kristina Fidelskaya’s fashion show took place, at the Palais de Tokyo, models’ waists were enhanced. They were adorned with long dresses. The show is called « dream ». It is a reminiscence filled with black, white and pastel hues . 

 

When attending the Man/Woman show, I discovered the Belgian brand Ginger (picture with the green dress below). It was created 5 years ago. Ginger’s latest collection is inspired by nature and is rooted in the woods. 

 

Their monochromic designs contrast with the colourful creations of Sophia Mamas, founder of Sorbet Island. I discovered Sorbet Island jewels last month (second part of the picture below), during MPFW. I came cross the Austrian brand during this fashion week as well and interacted with Sophia Mamas when at Tranoï. She told me her creations were inspired by childhood memories.

 

I was also intrigued by other brands during my journey at Tranoï. Lucia Olaru’s artsy collection caught my eye (first part of the picture above). Her clothes are made out of natural fabrics, silk, viscose and wool cotton. Even though she designs clothes which are linked to her personal tastes, she explained to me her freedom was limited as she had to appeal her costumers as well. « I can not do whatever I want », she said. 

Hence, one cannot underestimate how fashion shapes society’s opinion. 

To Alexandre Samson, a fashion historian I met, people have mixed feelings about Rick Owens. The designer is either loved or hatred, probably because his collections are polemical.

It is not a good thing for a designer to be vintage too soon, said Alexandre. It implies that his clothes were worn for a short period of time, sometimes only once, and that the designers’ creations become « second-skin » material.
