Is Barbie the latest style icon? (Anti) fashion unveiled

Dressed in medium blue low rise jeans, pink flip flops, and a matching Hawaï printed crop top, a “fashionista” was sipping her coffee. Her neon bob was sitting next to her, eager to be worn.

The phenomenon above can be defined as “anti-fashion,” a consequence of the 2000s inherited Y2K (why to care) movement. This type of ”anti-fashion” contrasts with 1970s anti fashion, namely hippies’ con consumerism fashion and punks’ counterculture wear.

It encompasses colourful, bold, beach-y, and divisive items. Y2K clothing can be called conscious kitsch or mauvais goût. These characteristics are intensified to bring back the 2000s dear to Barbie aficionados.

Hence, I see front row fashion week guests wearing flip flops, bob hats mainstreaming, underwear emerging from low rise jeans, and flashy colours yearning to be seen. Would I wear these clothes? No. But I notice fashion is somehow pastiched through this trend.

Let me know what is your (least) favourite anti fashion item.

XO

  1. Merci Chloé,
Le vintage est fashion en effet et cela m’amuse de croiser des jeunes femmes qui portent des tenues que j’ai eu plaisir à porter moi même il y a fort longtemps😂🤣
