How to have white(r) teeth

Your teeth are visible every single day: when you smile, laugh, sing, speak… They convey your emotions and you use them on a daily basis. Hence you should take good care of them. Let me show you tips that will help you maintain healthy and white(r) teeth.

1.Prevent your teeth from becoming yellow

If your teeth are yellow and/or stained it is probably due to your eating and drinking or to bad habits.

-tea, coffee, sodas

Many of us drink tea or coffee daily: some have a cup of coffee every morning to have some energy, others are tea addicts. The problem is tea and coffee stain our teeth and make them yellow. Here’s what you should do to help you deal with this issue: try to vary beverages (hot chocolate will give you energy just like your coffee does, you can drink a fresh smoothie instead of tea from time to time). If you really can’t go without your daily coffee or tea (and even if you can)  ALWAYS make sure you brush your teeth after drinking these beverages.

Others drink (too much) soda. Not only drinking tons of soda isn’t good for your health, but it also damages your teeth. Don’t drink soda everyday (orange juice and water are nice too -you can even try orange, lemon… flavored water). Drink soda using a straw when you have the chance (that way the sugar will not go into your teeth that much) and  brush your teeth after drinking soda.

-junk food

Having a burger or fries is nice from time to time but eating too much junk food will make your teeth yellow. Again, try to eat reasonable quantities of junk food and make sure to brush your teeth after eating junk food.

-smoking

Heavy smokers often have yellow teeth. Each time you pull out a cigaret, think about that. It might talk you out of smoking.

2/Brush your teeth correctly

Brushing your teeth after a meal is a thing, brushing your teeth correctly is another. How to brush your teeth correctly? Neither press too hard with your toothbrush nor not hard enough. Your teeth are sensitive so you shouldn’t be too agressive with them. You shouldn’t be too gentle either as you need to remove all the tartar from your teeth. Moreover, you should brush the inside, outside and under parts of your teeth.

-Pick the right toothbrush

Invest in a good toothbrush for an efficient brushing (you don’t need to buy a toothbrush that is too pricy but just a good quality toothbrush that will get rid of dental plaque). Chose a toothbrush that you feel comfortable with (hard, soft, medium…) And change your toothbrush at least every three months.

-Purchase a good toothpaste

I use Fluocaril (you can buy it at the pharmacy) or sensodyn toothpaste. They are a bit more expensive but definitely worth it: they remove all the tartar from your teeth and contribute to make them white(r), are gentle to gums and reinforce your enamel. You can also try lemon toothpaste as lemon makes your teeth white(r).

3. White(r) teeth at home

-Baking soda

This is a famous trick: mix baking soda and lemon/crushed strawberries or water (probably wiser as you don’t want to be too agressive with your teeth). Apply the paste on your teeth and brush for about two minutes (maximum). Your teeth will be white(r).

KEEP IN MIND that this solution might be effective but is damages your teeth (which is why I don’t like to use baking soda on my teeth).  If you use this trick don’t do it more than once a week. If your teeth are too sensitive and/or damaged you should avoid using baking soda on your teeth.

-Fruits:

>Banana

This trick is for courageous people. Place a banana peel inside your mouth (on top of your teeth) for about 15 minutes. Remove. Repeat several times for better results.

>Strawberries

I do this trick whenever I eat strawberries. Crush some strawberries and leave the mixture on your teeth for a couple minutes. Catherine Zeta Jones does this trick to have white(r) teeth.

>Lemon and orange

Orange and lemon peels make your teeth white(r). You can also rinse your mouth with lemon. You can try this more gentle option as well which is DELICIOUS and REFRESHING: mix lemon and water for a HOMEMADE LEMONADE (my mum makes us delicious ones)

-Coconut oil:

This might seem strange but this technique also known as the “oil pulling technique” is actually used.  Rinse your mouth with coconut oil for 5 to 20 minutes and spit. I personally never tried this technique as I don’t want to put oil in my mouth. But if you do try this trick -or already tried it before- do tell me how it goes.

I hope these tricks helped you. Now remember to smile and to show off your nice teeth.

Tell me which is your favorite trick and if you have other tricks, feel free to share them in the comments!

  1. I’ve been using charcoal and clay toothpastes to brush my teeth, it’s whitened them some but what I’m most happy about is that it’s completely resolved my hypersensitive teeth. No more sensitivity to hot or cold items, no more pain chewing, and teeth feel stronger than ever!
