Trend alert: espadrilles

It‘s no secret that straw accessories and rope shoes are on the top of the summer trend list. But you know what’s even better that that? Espadrilles. Combining both trends, these shoes have it all. Kenzo, Burberry, Chloé… most designers can’t get enough of them. Perfect for summer holidays, you will soon be addicted as well. Here’s what you need to know about the shoes that will be on your feet all summer.

 

History and facts

The word espadrille means “sandal of Sparta” in the Occitan language. In fact, this language is spoken in the south of France and some places of Italy and Spain. It was in these places, and then, in most European countries that espadrilles were worn. In fact, these shoes were born in the Pyrenees, in France in the 14^th century. Later on, they came into fashion in Asian as well as in American countries. Today, they remain summer essentials. Espadrilles are enjoyable shoes that you can wear anywhere. Whether you are going to the beach or simply walking around the city you’ll never get bored of them (Quebecers even use them as sports shoes). If this last fact might seem odd at first, it is actually perfectly understandable. Espadrilles are solid and comfortable shoes. In fact, their sole is essentially composed of jute and rubber. Most of the time, the top of the shoe is made of hessian. Espadrilles shoes exist through various forms, which evolved during the years. They were originally flats. However, today, espadrilles wedges are more and more into fashion and that is mostly thanks to Yves Saint Laurent and the Castañers. Saint Laurent invented wedges espadrilles in the 1970s, and the Castañer couple (Isabel and Lorenzo) brought them to life; and, after this event, produced luxury espadrilles.

 

How to wear them

These shoes are summer essentials for men and women. You can pull them off practically everywhere.  And BONUS: you can wear them with nearly everything. Here is proof.
